Attila - Der Hunne
Attila Khan (um 395 - 453) war der König der Hunnen, die als "Geißel Gottes" Europa bedrängten. Attilas Heimat lag innerhalb der Altyn Oba Horde und er führte den militärischen Titel eines Khara Bulkhar Yabghu Khan - "Prinz und Herrscher der Schwarzen Bulgaren". Der Begriff Attila ist Gotischen Ursprungs und bedeutet "Väterchen" (abgeleitet von "atta" – Vater). Daß dieser Name von den Hunnen selbst für ihren König verwendet wurde ist höchst unwahrscheinlich. Der Name wurde vermutlich von den Römern so übernommen und verbreitet. Im Nibelungenlied, das auf Mittelhochdeutsch verfasst wurde, wird Attila als Etzel bezeichnet. 434 v. Chr. gewann Attila, der sich als Geisel am römischen Hof in Ravenna befand, die Führerschaft über alle Hunnenstämme. 435/436 Vernichtung des Burgunder-Reiches von Worms. 441 drangen die Hunnen in den Balkan ein, als die römische Armee durch Auseinandersetzungen mit Vandalen und Persern abgelenkt war. 447 bis 450 Krieg gegen Ostrom. 451 Einfall in Gallien; In der Schlacht auf den Katalaunischen Feldern unterlagen seine germanischen Hilfsheere und die Hunnen unter Attila flüchteten nach Pannonien. Nach seiner Rückkehr begann Attila 452, über die Po-Ebene in Italien einzudringen und eroberte Mailand, Verona, Vicenza, Bergamo; Aquileia wurde zerstört. Leo I. verhinderte die Eroberung Roms durch Friedensverhandlungen mit Attila. Attilas Heer litt später stark unter Seuchen und Hungersnot und so mußte er Italien räumen. 453 v. Chr. starb Attila noch in der Hochzeitsnacht seiner Heirat mit Ildikó, der Tochter eines germanischen Fürsten, an einem Blutsturz. Nach seinem Tod wurde sein Reich unter seinen Söhnen geteilt. Er lebte als legendäre Figur weiter, insbesondere in der Gestalt des Etzel im Nibelungenlied; auch die Legende der hl. Ursula hielt seinen Namen populär. Vor- und frühgeschichtliche Bodendenkmäler wurden in Mittelalter und früher Neuzeit nicht selten mit Attila und seinen Hunnen in Verbindung gebracht. So ist im 14. Jahrhundert der Name "Etzelsburg" für das Römerkastell "Schirenhof" bei Schwäbisch Gmünd belegt. "Attila" und "Ildikó" sind heute noch populäre Namen in Ungarn.
