Originally ordered in June 1937, development of Germany’s new self-propelled 60cm siege mortar was supervised by General Karl Becker. Thus, it’s not surprising that the name “Karl” is often used to describe this particular Gerat 040 weapon! One prototype and six production versions of these 124-ton weapons were delivered between November 1940 and August 1941. They were fitted with a short-barreled 60cm L/8.44 mortar, and they saw combat service in such places as Lemberg and Sevastopol on the Eastern Front.
