Bucculae
(Singular: buccula)
These were typically articulated or fixed metal flaps attached to the sides of the helmet to protect the cheeks and part of the jaw. They were often attached with leather straps or metal hinges and could swing open or lie close to the face when the helmet was worn.
Cheek guards are a characteristic feature of Roman helmets such as the Imperial Gallic and Imperial Italic types used by legionaries during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD.
